Poker and its Betting Structures
There are four common versions or betting structures that are commonly used in most poker variants. Most people would immediately ask why knowing these betting structures would be important. A common response would be betting etiquette - knowing how high your bet can go can smooth your entrance if the game's already running or start it off with a bang. Another reason would be that strategies and poker tips change in value depending on how high you can bet.
Spread limit games are increasingly common in home-based poker or Texas Hold'em games. The term spread limit comes from the range of possible bets, which defines the minimum and maximum amount a player can put into the pot per bet. This range can control how fast the games can go, ensuring a long evening if previous games were plagued by bad all-in decisions. A related rule to this betting structure is that if a player before you bets, you may only raise that amount or greater, depending on the range. For example, if the player before you bet five dollars, your may only bet five or more.
Fixed limit games are the poker limits that can be found in casinos. This is rather simple as all it does is determine how large a bet per round a player can actually offer. If the limit is four, then that's all you can bet per round. It keeps things simple and low key for casual players at the casinos. Normally, the bets are doubled in the later round, to keep things a little exciting.
Pot Limit poker games are the closest a player can get to no limit without actually repeatedly going all-in without precedent. This is the betting variant wherein players can only bet or raise an amount equal to the chips currently in the pot. While seemingly harmless, this particular variant is insidious, as chips can vanish very quickly if the pot size is repeatedly doubled.
The king and most famous of the betting structures due in no small part to Texas Hold'em, is No Limit, where players bet how much they want whenever they want. In this variant, the game becomes immensely psychological and without an upper limit to the bets, stack size swings are more pronounced and drastic. It takes an immense amount of skill to perform at this level, skill that has to be specialized to this particular battlefield. The field changes so dramatically that some have even said that it is its own variant.
